Budget Update: Staff Reductions, Mandatory Furloughs move forward

The City’s Executive Policy Committee approved the preliminary 2014 Operating and Capital Budget with amendments.

However the preliminary budget continues to call for the elimination of 25 city positions, mainly through attrition and imposing a mandatory 3.5 days of unpaid leave between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day for non-essential staff. The city expects to save $1.5 million through the mandatory leave and a further $14.1 million through vacancy management in various departments city-wide. The City of Winnipeg is proposing a property tax increase of 2.95%, an operating budget of $967.8 million and a capital budget of $379 million.

WAPSO-IFPTE Local 162 has made presentations to City Committees in opposition to the staff reductions and mandatory furloughs contained within the 2014 operating budget and will be in attendance to speak at a special meeting of City Council tomorrow, Tuesday, December 17, 2013.

After tomorrow’s meeting we will inform members on the results of the budget vote.
