Follow-up on Furloughs

As you may be aware, on December 17, 2013, City Council approved the 2014 Budget which included the cost-saving measure of having non-essential civic employees take 3.5 days of unpaid leave from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day.

When these furlough days were first proposed during the preliminary budget process WAPSO asked for, and received, a legal opinion from our lawyer regarding the City's right to impose unpaid time.

We believe that the opinion received provides an argument that the construction of our Collective Agreement would prohibit the City from imposing their plan on WAPSO members. We have shared our views with the City.

We will continue to stay on top of this issue and will be updating the membership on any developments.
