Pallister Government responds to IFPTE regarding their union busting legislation

IFPTE received a response this week to our November 9th letter to Manitoba Premier, Brian Pallister taking issue with the Pallister government’s labour reform legislation (Bill 16) intended to weaken Manitoba’s provincial unions. The response, which was sent via a letter from Manitoba Minister of Finance, Scott Fielding, can best be described as a ‘race to the bottom’, as it justified their efforts to erode Manitoba’s superior labour law to, “align Manitoba with the vast Majority of Canadian jurisdictions…”. IFPTE President, Paul Shearon, commented that, “instead of pushing legislation to gut Manitoba’s public sector labour law, the Pallister government should instead be proud that Provincial workers have strong collective bargaining and due process protections, and urge Canadian jurisdictions elsewhere to emulate them, not the other way around. IFPTE urges members to join the Manitoba Federation of Labour’s campaign to defeat Bill 16.” Learn more about the campaign here, and see the Pallister government response here.
